Award underlines importance of Europe

The Treaties of Nijmegen medal, which has been awarded to former European Commission President Jacques Delors, gives recognition to the importance of European cooperation. Speaking at the award ceremony, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen paid tribute to Mr Delors’s tireless efforts to promote European integration and joint action.

Verhagen: The Netherlands must stand up for its international reputation

‘The Netherlands must prevent international divisions from damaging its reputation in the world. That’s why Dutch diplomats are increasingly speaking directly to ordinary citizens abroad, particularly in the Muslim world.’ Dutch foreign minister Maxime Verhagen made these remarks at the opening today of a conference on public diplomacy, hosted by the FORUM institute for multicultural affairs.

The Netherlands is in favour of Estonia’s accession to the euro zone, providing it meets all the criteria. This was foreign minister Maxime Verhagen’s message following a meeting with his Estonian counterpart Urmas Paet in Tallinn.
